Straits Times Index jumps as blue chips surge

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore shares rose 3.36 percent by midday on Monday as blue chips surged, powered by upbeat sentiment after Wall Street rallied on Friday.

The Straits Times Index, which rose almost two percent last week, was 57.91 points higher at 1,779.43 by the break.

The index hit a five-week high of 1,783.51 in the morning.

In the broader market, gainers outpaced losers 233 to 44, with 98 issues unchanged. Volume was active at 458 million shares.
