Jim, >>Can anyone name the hardware manufacturers that are producing cable modems?<< Just guessing but I'd say the usual suspects probably make cable modems. As you point out, US Robotics (3Com), General Instruments, Motorola, Rockwell--all so big that cable modems contribute a very small percentage to their revenues. Are there any small, public companies that sell cable modem equipment to cable companies? In a broader sense, you're trying to find companies that will benefit from the enormous demand for more bandwidth, IMO, a good area to prospect in and one with a ton of small companies to weed through, some potential winners, most turkeys. Good ones are had to find. For examplk, there's an emerging protocol called "fibre channel," gig bandwidth for you LAN network, but there are also a large number of companies with offerings to impliment that standard. As yet, I haven't found one with enough of a proprietary edge to look like a flat out winner, though most will make a little money. Anyway, the demand for bandwidth is definitely worth looking into.
