I'm watching the contretemps over the NC ad as one sign of what may happen in the general. Wright is presented as the unpatriotic one but it actually carries the racist message. Jessie Helms old parts of the Rep party in NC sponsored the ad.

Is McCain/the RNC serious about stopping it? If he can't, does it diminish his stature? Is it a good copy/bad cop routine? How would independents respond to the smears involved in that sort of ad--does it lose more votes than it gains? Etc.

And not just in NC, obviously, but nationally as well. And, of course, nationally is the whole point.
