I don't believe the long term problem will be outsourcing. It's hard enough to write quality software when everyone is in the same building, let alone strewn across continents and time zones. No, the danger is wholesale foreign competition from India and China; for example, the emergence of a Chinese Oracle company.

However, I have hired and know a good number of engineers from China and India. Once they get a taste of Silicon Valley, very few want to go back to live in their home countries. As long as we keep drawing the best talent from around the world, SV will maintain its edge.

However, it is sad how few homegrown engineers we have. It leaves us vulnerable to the Chinese or Indian Oracle scenerio. I believe it is not so much an issue with our schools per se, but a cultural thing. Indians and Chinese see a career in Engineering as prestigious; Americans still see engineers as nerds...
