At the end of Q3 2006, WCDMA accounted for 9.8 per cent of Western European subscriptions, according to Informa Telecoms & Media. By the end of October the figure had surpassed 10 per cent, up from 4.3 per cent at the end of Q3 2005.

Three operator groups are clear leaders in the 3G segment in western Europe: Vodafone, H3G and Telecom Italia account for the majority of WCDMA subscriptions and together had more than 26 million at the end of Q3 2006.

O2 group has shown a strong upturn in WCDMA sales in Q3 2006, a sign that it has finally made a commitment to start promoting 3G handsets. Orange and T-Mobile have yet to demonstrate a clear commitment to pushing 3G in the markets in which they operate. <<
