Nevertheless, GeneChip(R) *IS* a REGISTERED US TRADEMARK (see the text below [graphics aren't reproducible] which appears as a notice on the Affymetrix, Inc., home web page). And any company legal department worth its salt is going to tenaciously guard against ANY use of its registered trademark as generic terminology, even if it's the US President using it in a State of the Union address. Regardless of the intention, 'gene chip' legally means 'the Affymetrix GeneChip(R) System'.
