Ericsson, Intel in chip deal worth about $1.5 bln (Flash memory); Intel Buying Rockwall Chip Making Plant

STOCKHOLM, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Telecoms group Ericsson, the world's third largest cellphone maker, said on Thursday it was in a deal with U.S. Intel <INTC.O> worth around $1.5 billion to get supplies of flash-memory chips for three years.

"The flash-memory order is worth around ($1.5 billion)," Ericsson <LMEb.ST> spokeswoman Helena Norrman told Reuters.

"This is all part of our plans to ensure we get the components we need for our production."

The deal with Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, ensures a steady supply of chips for Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson when the demand for flash-memory is heating up.

Ericsson said last week that it planned to increase its global market share of mobile phones to 15 percent in 2000 from 12 percent last year. This would mean boosting production to around 60 million units from 31 million units last year.

Ericsson says it had secured the necessary components needed to meet mobile phone demand for 2000.

Strong demand in sales of cellphones and other new digital equipment like personal digital assistants, digital cameras and MP3 music players has caused a shortage of supply of some components, like flash-memory chips.

Flash-memory chips are lightweight storage devices that retain memory when power is switched off.

Ericsson shares were five crowns lower at 706 crowns in a steady market.
