THOUSANDS DEMAND MUBARAK QUIT (This part of the world is becoming interesting to watch!!!!) 6.4.2005. 11:53:53 Thousands of Egyptian students have staged demonstrations at university campuses to urge President Hosni Mubarak to resign. An estimated 8,000 students at five universities in Cairo and the Nile Delta called for the government to lift its 24 year old state of emergency. Authorities have used the emergency laws to arrest members of the Muslim Brotherhood in raids to prevent demonstrations. The group has staged protests in the last three days and is planning a campaign with the tagline “Arise, Egyptians, freedom calls you.” They want political reform to ensure genuine multi-party presidential elections and reject any attempt to install Mr Mubarak’s son to succeed his father. Security sources say the students did not leave the campuses to avoid confrontation with riot police. Egypt has made small steps towards reform with government proposals to overturn the constitutional selection process for the president. The old system uses a referendum to elect a single candidate backed by parliament. But Egypt’s opposition fears the plan will not institute real change and will only favour Mr Mubarak. He has been president since 1981 and faces re-election in September.
