The 11 year sunspot cycle is about 1/2 way into the maximum activity phase. Typically there is exhibited a double top on a chart of the cycle. One marks the end of increasing activity, the other belongs to the declining phase. There's been one top so far.

At the 2nd top, the decline begins and lasts for about 5 years. During the declining phase, the odds of very significant flaring episodes increase a bit.

In Sept. 1859, the Carrington event came at the first top.

The Quebec storm came after the first of a messy, multiple peak on cycle 22.
