I buy large bags of frozen organic produce- it's flash frozen in the fields- so it eliminates a lot of the spoilage costs for the producers, and it eliminates the spoilage problem for me- so it's cheaper in many ways.
Bulk oranges- 19lbs for 7.79 (I think, or 7.97)- at Costco. I juice my own orange juice, and send oranges with the kids. If I were buying the oranges at the supermarket it would be unusual to see them for less than .99 a pound.
Salad- bought in bulk at costco. I can also get 5 lbs of organic carrots for 3.00. I'd have to pay 1.66 a pound for those carrots at the super market.
Milk- 2 half gallons of organic for under 10 dollars at Costco. That milk is over 6.00 a half gallon at the supers, and even at Trader Joes- which used to be on a par with Costco.
Organic chicken broth, organic Ketsup, uncured sausage and uncured hot dogs, organic grass feed beef, 3lb bags of organic spinach, avocados- all at Costco, all much cheaper than in the supermarket, all part of a healthy diet.
We eat small amounts of rice with our (primarily) veggie, fruit, cheese, soy, lean meat, diet- and we bought a big 50 lb bag some time ago. We're only about 1/2 way through it.
So bulk will save you cash even when you buy healthy. |
