you are correct i think. what many really wanted and still want is howard dean, but he could not have won and could not have even gotten the dnc big support. they are not like the old french communists who were so stupid they would never compromise on some socialist candidate (we do have to consider they were French communists.). so the kerry voters are going to be a brew of many different interests with the only real objective of defeating bush. should kerry be elected, there will be huge disappointment from many anti-bush supporters. this is because kerry won't know what he wants to do anyway, and he can't please most of his anti-bush supporters either.
