U.K. Industry Production Fell in January, Down 5.2% in Year

London, March 12 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. industrial production shrank in January as manufacturing contracted for a fifth month, government figures showed.

Production at factories, utilities and mines fell 0.5 percent in January after a 0.3 percent drop in December, the national statistics office said. Manufacturing, which makes up 80 percent of production, shrank by 0.4 percent. Economists predicted no change.

U.K. manufacturers, who curtailed production at the fastest pace since 1991 in the fourth quarter, have yet to see a recovery in orders. RMC Group Plc, the world's biggest maker of ready-mixed concrete, said last week it expects demand in Germany, Europe's largest economy, to remain ``depressed'' this year.
