All I can think of is that Kerry has lived most of his adult life (except for Vietnam, of course!) in a very protective cocoon. For the last 20 years it's been the Senate, which he won with the assistance of the Kennedy machine. He probably thought the tactics and techniques he used to win there would win now. But as Nadine pointed out, this campaign is showing that he doesn't really have the political smarts he needs, and also he doesn't have a platform to stick to (When I am President I will 1), 2), 3), etc). So now he's flailing in the wind with no anchor.
