When I grew up the Democrats were the 'good guys', the compassionate party, coming up with new program after new program to take care of one needy group after another .... social security, medicare, medicaid, food stamps, WIC, housing programs, etc etc etc. The Republicans were the grownup party, worried about balancing the budget and paying for all the things the Democrats came up with. The Democrats controlled both houses of Congress for 40 years on the simple formula. Finally the Republicans smartened up and stopped being the goats, being the tax collectors for the welfare state. Today, the budget ceiling dispute is all about the Democrats trying to force the Republicans back into the old role. Seven months ago, the Democrats controlled Congress and the WH and could have sat on their ass and let the 'Bush tax cuts' they'd been lambasting for a decade expire. But they didn't. They extended them. Now they want the Republican House to do what they wouldn't ... raise taxes. The Democrats need to be told to go to hell. No tax increases, no new taxes!!!
