Why would UNITA ask for a mere five days extension. Are they serious about completing the peace process? Must be somewhat if they have asked for five days - if they weren't, why request five days unless they want to unload their diamond inventory quickly because the UN wants to slap sanctions on them banning anyone in the world to buy or trade for diamonds from UNITA. Below is from the BBC website:

The joint commission overseeing Angola's peace process meets today Wednesday to discuss the latest deadline for the handover by the former rebel movement, UNITA, of areas under its control.

The United Nations Security Council has said it will consider a UNITA request for a five-day extension of its deadline if the commission, which includes UNITA representatives, recommends it.

The Security Council said it would freeze UNITA assets and place a ban on its diamond trade on Thursday if the movement had not fully implemented the 1994 peace accord.

UNITA has yet to disband all its fighters and hand over several areas under its control.

From the newsroom of the BBC World Service

The US sending 4 million in supplies and helicopters shows support from the biggest country - others will follow and maybe the SL mess can be resolved in the near term (an end to all fighting). Many companies have been travelling to SL in the last month to discuss business. I assume the country has a mining policy but needs to talk with companies before it is released as well as be able to assure safety and provide safetyto entice companies back in as soon as possible (and this might include other countries that are not currently in SL). (one other note - it is the rainy season in SL and many diamond areas can not be mined right now)
