As most of you know GENZ's Sepracoat was found by an FDA Advisory committee to have not proven efficacy. The more important product however is Seprafilm which is a thin film sheet which has been approved by the FDA to reduce adhesions in abdominal surgeries. Adhesions are a major problem in colon rectal surgery resulting in rehospitalization in a majority of cases and in many cases additional surgery. Seprafilm has been proven to reduce adhesions and is starting to gain acceptance in some major hospitals. Recently GENZ announced that the Cleveland Clinec a well respected institution adopted Seprafilm as a standard of care in all colon rectal surgeries. I believe the price of the film is about 250 per sheet and an average of three sheets are used per surgery. This of course is a bargain compared to the 20,000 dollars it would cost if adhesions result in new surgery. I don't know exactly how many surgeries there are per year but the number is very large. GENZ recently sponsored a conference call with the Chief of Colon recal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Florida branch. If you want to hear it call 402-220-6030 thru 5:00pm May 20th. Its about 15 min in length. LWD I would be interested in what Dr LWD thinks.
