Obama has a few recovery options. The best one is to get rid much of his staff and replace them political pros of a different sort. Note that BHO has problems with both the conservative blue dog Democrats and the left wing of his party, and is now seen as week by people who watch which way the wind is blowing. Considering the immense amount of stimulus spending, he should have had the blue dogs eating from his hand. There has been more than enough money spent to turn the blue dogs into lap dogs. I think part of this problem is that Congress was making it's own favors via Pelosi and Reid, and not trained to be dependent on the White House for their goodies. The left wing should have been feed a few more symbolic gestures (there have been some), partially bought off, and fewer weaker troublemakers criticized by the White House early in the game to keep them in line. After BHO gets new staff, he can use some politicization of regulator agencies to re build support and keep congress in line to some degree. He would then need to push some middle of the road proposals to get Republican cooperation. **** The other options would be to bail out of Afghanistan or Iraq, either one. That could be followed by cutting a deal with either Iran or the Russians that would re frame (or at least appear to re frame) the strategic picture. *************** The US president does have a large number of options for action. Interestingly, BHO (and most current staff) does not seem to know where the control buttons are (contrast with Bill Clinton)... all they know is how to get elected.
