Hello Brian,
"They threaten to kill their own kin." I.E.The Communists so threaten. Literally that is true but there is a tacit accompanying comment, i.e. if you don't secede from China we won't fight you. Lest you think that I am day dreaming, isn't that the Communist policy for the last 40 years? As long as Taiwan governments say that they are part of China then all kinds of trade and investment relations are happening, with the consent of the Communist government. If a Taiwan government should declare independence then war is promised.
I believe that when the political differences between Taiwan and the mainland diminish to near zero, i.e. they introduce habeas corpus, free speech etc. on the mainland and these rights become firmly entrenched then Taiwan people will happily rejoin China. That's 40-50 years off, I suppose. **
Naturally it's much easier for people like me who don't live in Taiwan to be optimistic about Taiwan's future than for people on the front lines of the problem.

** In the Three Sisters, a play by Chekov, a character declares
that in 200 or 300 years from then, the world will have become a paradise. Similar raving?
