Talk about bad timing...

From today's San Jose Mercury News

Microsoft, meanwhile, is trying to spread the word to its partners about an ill-timed mail promotion. The software giant recently sent nearly 2,000 friends who had helped with the launch of Windows XP a thank-you gift: miniature Zen gardens consisting of sand and rocks in a wooden frame.

Once the anthrax scare hit, Microsoft realized folks might not be too keen on receiving a powder-like substance in the mail. The company rushed out an e-mail alerting its partners that the packages were kosher.

``It was unfortunate timing,'' Microsoft spokesman Matt Pilla says with admirable understatement.
