Deputy in firing line for chip plant move

Lawmakers from the Taiwan Solidarity Union have demanded the Vice-Premier, Lin Hsin-yi, step down for what they call an "erroneous" decision to ease curbs on local chipmakers building manufacturing plants in China.

The TSU members also vowed to mobilise more than 20,000 people to stage a protest either tomorrow or on Tuesday to put pressure on President Chen Shui -bian's Government over the decision. They already held a demonstration last Saturday.

"What the cabinet has decided is erroneous because it will cause irreparable damage to our national security and economy," said Hsu Den-koun, the TSU's Legislative Yuan caucus director.

"For this, we want Lin Hsin-yi, who is responsible for this decision, to step down."

Mr Lin was reported as having proposed allowing local semiconductor firms to set up 20cm wafer fabrication plants in China on the grounds that the island already has the technology to build 30cm wafer plants.

The Executive Yuan decided on Friday to ease the curbs on the transfer of the 20cm wafer technology on a "actively open but effectively control" basis.
