Broadcom's ServerWorks Ships Grand Champion(TM) HE SystemI/O(TM) for Intel(R) Xeon(TM) MP Processor Based Servers-Grand Champion Architecture Leverages Development Costs to Address Servers From Entry Level to Enterprise Level
PR NEWSWIRE, 3/12/2002 3:00:00 AM HANNOVER, Germany, CeBIT, Mar 12, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- ServerWorks Corporation, a Broadcom (Nasdaq: BRCM) company and the leading independent supplier of high-performance SystemI/O(TM) integrated circuits for servers, today announced it has commenced shipments of its Grand Champion(TM) HE (GC-HE) SystemI/O core logic for 4-way Intel(R) Xeon(TM) MP processor-based servers. Platforms based on the GC-HE and Intel Xeon MP processors offer a combination of high memory bandwidth and high Reliability/ Availability/ Serviceability (RAS) for server, storage, and network appliance applications that were previously served by more expensive, proprietary architectures.
GC-HE Supports Intel Xeon MP Processors with Advanced RAS
The GC-HE, ServerWorks' most configurable SystemI/O design, supports up to four Intel Xeon or Xeon MP processors, up to 64 Gigabytes of memory, six independent PCI-X bus segments and a traditional 32-bit PCI bus. It delivers memory bandwidth up to 6.4 Gigabytes per second and 5 Gigabytes per second of I/O bandwidth throughput.
In addition, the GC-HE provides unmatched RAS features that are demanded by today's enterprise-level servers. The GC-HE SystemI/O incorporates ServerWorks' advanced memory resiliency features, including on-line spare memory in which a stand-by on-board DIMM is called into operation if one of the on-line memory modules fails, as well as memory scrubbing that detects errors before they can impact system operation, memory mirroring for extra robust operation and hot plug memory that allows memory upgrades while the system continues in operation. The logic includes a sophisticated 128-bit Error Correcting Code (ECC(TM)) algorithm that enhances system reliability by detecting 16-bit errors and correcting 8-bit errors. The memory controller incorporates ServerWorks' enterprise IBM Chipkill(TM) technology that maintains system data integrity, even if one of the DRAM chips experiences a catastrophic failure.
"Intel's Xeon MP processors provide unprecedented performance and value for the enterprise-level server market," commented Raju Vegesna, President and CEO of ServerWorks. "ServerWorks' Grand Champion HE enables the Intel Xeon MP to address the market previously served by much more expensive RISC architectures without sacrificing performance or reliability. It provides the memory and I/O bandwidth that allows Intel's Xeon MP processors to operate at their highest levels, as well as the RAS features knowledgeable server buyers have come to demand."
The Grand Champion architecture leverages ServerWorks' SystemI/O technology by implementing common internal circuitry and external interfaces, as well as common South Bridges and I/O Bridges. The Scalability between the high-performance, feature-rich GC-HE and the high volume GC-LE designs (announced in February 2002) allows system developers to share BIOS code and system management software across both platforms.
Availability
The Grand Champion HE chipset, supporting 2-way or 4-way server implementations, includes a North Bridge (Part # NB7410), a South Bridge (Part # SB7440), five memory controller interface chips (Part # NB7430) and one to three Dual-Channel PCI-X controllers (Part # IB7420). The Grand Champion HE chipset is now available in volume quantities.
