Basically, your assumptions seem to be right.
However, it seems to me that the wafer market is different from the DRAM market. I doubt wether a real spot market for wafers exists. I have bought some 4'' wafers over the last 5 years and the price seemed to be stable (around 25-30$ a piece). Most wafers are bought due to long term contracts with the chip manufacturers at fixed prices I believe. I think that the wafer producers work closely together with their clients to meet the future demand for wafers. This works because ramping up a chip plant needs about the same time than ramping up a wafer plant. Price fluctuations are possible when the wafer producers build up excess capacity (perhaps because chip fab building is delayed).
