RESEARCH ALERT - Amkor EPS estimates raised
NEW YORK, March 27 (Reuters) - SG Cowen said Monday it raised its 2001 earnings estimate on Amkor Technology Inc. (NasdaqNM:AMKR - news), the world's largest provider of contract microelectronic manufacturing solutions, to $1.78 from $1.53, citing its acquisition of Anam Semiconductor's facilities in February.
-- Said there is further potential upside to earnings based on Amkor's stake in Anam and its water <sic> fab, which is a facility that was developed with inhouse manufacturing facilities using, in this case, processing technology from Texas Instruments.
-- Said the acquisition could boost gross margins from under 20 percent in the first quarter to about 26 percent in the third quarter.
-- Said Amkor's shares are ``significantly undervalued.'
-- Said Amkor is a dominant player in the independent semiconductor packaging area, which is growing amid strong expansion in the semiconductor market, increasing complexity of packaging technology, the rapid growth of ``fabless' semiconductor firms, or firms lacking inhouse manufacturing facilities, and the shift among traditional chipmakers to outsource packaging.
-- Said continues to rate the stock a strong buy.
