Charles, benchmarks for enterprise applications performance for Opteron 2-way and 4-way systems are competitive on an absolute basis with IPF and the hands down winner on a per dollar basis. I believe this will be true as larger systems are assembled. [Sun announced they are developing an 8-way (16 with dual core) server that will be released in 2005]

On the backward compatibility side, AMD/Intel have been ditching some of the legacy support as they have crafted more RISC like features into x86. It's a slow process, because they can't really obsolete code before it would otherwise become obsolete. An example of this is AMD64s inability to run 16-bit code. No more DOS even if you really really want it.

Intel bet on IPF for monopoly reasons, but they had a second horse in the race as well EM64T. When it looked like IPF wasn't going to finish, they placed their bets on x86-64 -- which I think is the death knell for IPF.
