We hadn't spoken for months, i've been away a lot ... been thinking recently that i should call him, never got around to it
Howie, speaking of venezolanos, Dave Holender was one ... he was around the km88 play early on, staked a few claims and was generally part of the action .... he knew Bobby Miller, Randy Reifel no doubt, probably all major players involved there at the time ... ended up selling most of his claims to Robert Friedland's Carson Gold and became a director of the company, later it became Diamondworks and then Energem
Dave supported Chávez at first, worked on his campaign in 1998, being thoroughly disgusted with the previous bunch, and expecting something better from C ... i remember how enthused he was, we talked about it at length then ... well that soon changed, within a year or two he was saying how disillusioned he was, how the reality was not matching up at all with the election platform, Chávez had gone off on a radical tangent, and these círculos bolivarianos had a distinctly stalinist potential for repression of dissent, they were being so used to some degree from the start ... by about 2001 he was supporting the governor of Miranda as the best candidate to replace C, and he was spending a lot of time and effort on the recall campaign ... i don't think Dave would have changed his mind lightly, without what he saw as good reason |
