MS. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
by Shirley Smith

Well, everybody's got a book out there today; it's hard to keep up. But, I get a review of QPB every month and what books they are pushing and to my surprise on a separate ad, with President Carter's book, Our Endangered Values, on one side and on the other side was a book The Case For Hillary Clinton, by Susan Estrich. And, it goes on to review and say,

Susan Estrich never had much faith in Hillary Clinton. The Democratic political strategist who ran Michael Dukakis's Presidential campaign is among the many whose immediate response to Clinton's expected run for President was blunt: "She could never win." But in this lively political forecast, Estrich offers a reasoned, passionate view of Hillary's prospects, arguing that the "moderate" (My emphasis), newly respected Senator is the only viable Democratic candidate.

And, it goes on and on. Now, I know what the word "moderate" means, in Democratic talk ... it means, centrist or Republican Lite, only they (DLC) have changed the wording. What did make this woman change her mind, I wonder ... well, money and a book probably were the main reasons ... along with the DLC and maybe a job in the future? Who knows. Everybody seems to have their price today, and no deep rooted convictions about democracy in this country.

I hate to disappoint people, because they want so much to have back the jobs and the money or more security, that people had during Clinton's eight years. It says as much in this brochure that people think Hillary will bring about those changes. Wake the hell up. Go back in time and check out all of her votes. Clinton, the husband, can't keep from chumming around with the Bushes, especially Poppy ... to me, that is like keeping time with criminals who haven't been caught or charged yet.  It will never help the Democratic party, like it helps the GOP. After all of the death, debt and destruction, to see Clinton making jokes and carrying on with those people and traveling, visiting ... well, it burns my ass.

I had so much respect for President Carter during Mrs. King's funeral.

Clinton, joked with Bush and then Bush the elder joked about the Black churches, well, you can't live in the South and never have, either been to a Black church or understand their services, so Bush was just wanting to make a remark. And, to me, Black Americans know how to celebrate a person's life and death. But, I'm always amazed at those elite in our society who think they have earned the right to comment or judge just about everything we Americans do with our lives, when it has nothing to do with them, and of course, we don't get to tell them what to do, even when they are working for us in US government.

Quoting from this paper, and I'd like to know why they used Hillary's 70% approval rating in New York as approval for her becoming president. I see that figure constantly batted around when people talk about her as a viable candidate for the presidency. "Hillary is much broader-minded than many on the Right claim. Not to mention that her marriage to President Clinton lends her a wealth of hands-on expertise no other candidate could bring to the job."

Notice that they mention her approval from the Right. The Right aren't going to be the ones voting for her. Anyone could be president. Bush has proved that over and over again. That's not the point. A Black American, an American Indian, have more chances of becoming president of this nation than a woman ever would have, and we know all three aren't going to happen in the near future. Now, the Right would love to see Hillary be their challenger because they already know this. I don't have to see polls or statistics, just look at how women have to fight for the rights to their own bodies and lives. Hell, they had to fight to vote and it hasn't been that long ago. Divorce was hardly an issue for a woman only 30 years ago. They had to leave a marriage with just the shirts on their backs. Rape, don't ask. I still remember how that has been argued in court.

If the DLC comes up with a candidate, Hillary or some other one, the Democratic Party can just fold the hell up. They have lost before the vote. We may have a woman someday or one day, but we don't even have that many women in Congress today. What is this push because Clinton, did some things right, but they can't get away from the fact that those eight years also helped the Republicans ... out of all of the hell that went on, Clinton was still bipartisan to the end. We lost a hellava lot of seats back then.

We need Democrats in leadership of the Democratic Party.  We need change ... real change, not just more of what we had even back then. The Democratic party has served this country well for years and years long before the Clintons entered it and then they changed this party to suit themselves and it has almost killed us off. If people don't realize why the Democrats held their power for so long it was because of what they did and they aren't doing it today, they are listening to these Republican Lites, who aren't either one, Republican or Democrat. These types really do belong on the Independent ticket. That's who they appeal to.

I wish we could just fold up that DLC. They have really screwed this party up and they are still at it. Hillary acts like she's not campaigning, but just like her stupid flag bit, she will bend over for a vote, I don't want just a politician in the White House ever again ... I've never seen a book out like this, but it's not my cup of tea anyway. Of course, Bush is not a politician because he is not a Republican, he is a common criminal and not a very smart one, just lucky to be pulling these crimes in front of a weak congress, that's all.

These next two elections will be the deciding factor of the life of the Democratic party, in my mind. I want changes through this party because it takes too long to rebuild another party. But, the power behind this DLC is suffocating this party and I and people like me, don't have the power to stop it. And, I believe there's lots of people like me out there, everywhere, who are not heard from and are not being represented. In fact, the majority of Americans are not being represented by either party today.
