I did a search for "swift vets" at the NYT search engine. There are a few entries from August 18 on. However, the issue was essentially ignored before then. Of course, it was at the same time raging in the blogosphere and elsewhere.

We are either seeing the birth of a new paradigm for the delivery of information or simply the slow downwards slide of a formerly great newspaper into oblivion. I suspect it may be a combination of the two dynamics, the latter being fortuitous.

For all their critics, the more dedicated bloggers have the luxury of spending enough time on an issue to research their points in a manner that makes traditional media look superficial. The best bloggers are now becoming the equivalent of political commentators such as Novak, et al. They of course don't have the access to the players that the old pros still do, but in this day and age I don't think it is a big deal.

I wonder if the best bloggers will end up working for traditional media.
