I'm in the "it's not as bad as the doom and gloomers make it out to be" camp when it comes to how I view the overall US economic situation going forward. So I agree with your concepts and I think there are plenty of companies who's stock is priced for a tougher road ahead then we will actually see. When I refer to cumulative guidance, I am making the point that I think it's important to see what companies are saying, whether or not their view is accurate. Earlier this year, guidance was very generous and we have found that it was too bullish. Of course, the market recognized this and that was one of the main reasons it tanked hard starting in July. So far, I see a much more restrained view of next quarter's earnings, which could allow for more upside surprises. Companies are learning (the hard way) that they must temper their bullish views to reflect the sluggish situation the US economy is in at the moment.
