steven gardner did an interview on friday night's scarborough country. i have not seen it mentioned here. steven gardner was on with john hurley as kerry spokesman. gardner was a machine gunner on kerry's boat, and talked about his being on kerry's boat christmas eve with kerry and not in cambodia. he also talked about a sampan incident from jan. 20, 1969, in which he said kerry's boat got too close to a sampan at night (there was a sampan curfew), i.e., 30 yards instead of 200-300 yards before illuminating the sampan with a search light. the sampan guy pulled an ak47, and gardner shot him and a little boy on the sampan. he said they took on a woman and a child from the boat. he showed kerry's incident report from kerry's unreleased file (how could he get that?), and he said the incident report showed 4 vietcong killed, 1 man killed, and 2 captured in action. in addition he talked about the now-famous action where the pcf was struck by the mine. he apparently was not on the boat during that action. gardner said he showed the sampan incident document to illustrate how on seemingly trivial actions kerry would embellish his reports.
