Seems to me that a key question for Sun is this: if there comes to be such a thing as a widely-used broadband thin client, and it runs a MSFT O/S, how much business can Sun get on the server side?

I would tend to doubt that patents will save Sun on the client side. Microsoft would have a little leverage on the server side too, just by supplying the client O/S...the question is whether it would be enough. I would be pretty unsurprised to see MSFT go from huffy self-righteous defendant to huffy self-righteous plaintiff (waving its much larger patent portfolio around) to get that server business, if there ever is any.
