Claude,
I would tend to think that Lucent is more interested in new technology, rather than a huge company like ASND that has been troubled lately. There has been much to learn about large mergers in the technology arena. Typically the larger the deals, the more devistating the results. COMS/USRX is showing us its problems, Synoptics and (Can't remember) now BAY, had its hard times. The companies that are aquiring hot upstarts with new technology are what are creating all the advancement in the successful aquisitions. CSCO has thoroughly proven this method. If we put our heads to it, I bet we could come up with a nice long list.

I personally think that if a company wants to grow its market share and distribution channels, the more prudent way is to acquire the newest technology from a fresh private upstart for a few hundred million, then spend the other $4 billion that you would have spent buying some other company on developing the distribution channels that you don't have.

Wayde.
