Russian intelligence services are searching for the source of a leak into reports that Russian special operations forces took part in covertly moving Iraq's weapons out of the country in the weeks prior to the Iraq war.

Publicly Moscow is denying that its troops took part in destroying documents and trucking special weapons to Syria, Lebanon and possibly Iran, U.S. officials said.

John A. Shaw, deputy undersecretary of defense for international technology security disclosed the sensitive intelligence on the arms transfers last month. He said he learned of the operation from two European intelligence services.

According to U.S. officials, Russian spetsnaz were dispatched to Iraq in January 2003 after it became clear that U.S. military action was likely.
