It's just a starting number that I have been using for the last several years. I agree w/ you that EV/EBITDA is probably better and I just need to change my approach. I have my screen set up for using the GN calculator so it is quite easy to figure especially when I am scanning several stocks a day.

FWIW, sometimes I adjust the stated BV as I dig deeper to back out intangible assets such as Goodwill or other overstated assets IMO, but usually it does not change the valuation very much.

Also, I do not even look at any Banks and/or insurance companies any more as I do not trust their stated BV and many times their balance sheet and income statements are too complicated for me to understand. EPS estimates to me can be manufactured.
