WHAT'S THE POINT?

By Cori Dauber

More on the Marines fighting in Fallujah here. Today's version of why what's being accomplished in the city doesn't matter all that much is that now they're only fighting for "terrority" (despite the rapidly increasing counts of enemy dead.)

But what the press keeps gliding over, not drawing out the implication of, is what they're finding in those mosques: yes, they're finding weapons caches. But along with the weapons that would have kept the enemy fighting (weapons that would have been used to kill Americans and Iraqi government forces) they keep finding what are essentially factories for the assembly of IEDs.

Finding and destroying those means that even with violence spreading to other cities in a counteroffensive, those enemy fighters who slipped out of Fallujah are going to find it much harder to sustain that violence.
