Ray Rosen at "Press Think" had a long boring-he doesn't write well-piece recently on what the blogs are doing. He says they are developing and keeping stories going until the media catches on. The "old media" gave a story 24 hours, and if it didn't have legs by then it was gone. This doesn't happen anymore.
