That is still subject to speculation. The fact is as of today,
Merced is still vaporware! It doesn't exists. While the
promise may hold certain implications for the future, but
it is still not written in stone that indeed that is what
going to happen.

Merced based machines will be years away. (We are talking
next Millennium). Make no mistake about it, when Merced
comes out, it will be an expensive piece of hardware. The
machines base on it will cost as much as Sparcs based servers.
As I mentioned before and have always maintained. PC scale
of economy does not apply to performace servers (mid to high
end) because the cost of microprocessor figures less in the
overall cost.

The key here is that SUN hopes that solaris on Merced will
cannibalize WinNT.

As of today, Sun is very much committed to the future of
Sparc based machines.

The recent heisman trophy award taught us a very important
lesson. You don't give away the award in the preseason
as many people where ready to give it away to Peyton Manning,
but Charles Woodson came out from no where and won it.
There is still a season long of football to be played.

Merced has not yet been delivered.
