I haven't got the book yet but surmise that there was indeed shooting but it was from the boats and not returned. One boat blows up, there are people near guns, it wouldn't take much for one to think he saw something, start shooting, then the others shoot, until they realize nobody is shooting back.

Lots of echoes on water.

No way that the rest of the events took place while under enemy fire. Just not at all credible that they'd have time to hook up the damaged boat and tow it but not sustain any bullet damage.

But that's not really the point anymore, the swifties are moving to round two, which is 1971.
