People trading the breakouts, I would guess. It is difficult to tell if the mini is varying from the large because of the time delay in reporting. It is more elastic, of course, and so the extremes may be different particularly on news.

I know how you feel about the time spent trying to determine a volume strategy. I spent a lot of time on it a couple of years ago and dropped it. It always felt as if there had to be something there but it escaped me. So I still rely on patterns for the most part, with TA and ANN's thrown in for secondary confirmations. The ANNs work best in other markets in my experience, however. Bonds, Currencies, Oil and so forth. Trading SP off an ANN is something that I tried for 2 and a half years and never got that to work either.
