Intel invests more in Liquid Audio, Quokka Sports
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Semiconductor company Intel Corp. (INTC - news) said it made more undisclosed investments in two start-up companies, Liquid Audio and Quokka Sports.
The investments are part of Intel's strategy of investing in companies developing personal computer applications that make the most of high performance processing power.
Liquid Audio, based in Redwood City, Calif., develops secure online music distribution systems, to enable music distribution over the Internet, while protecting artists and record companies from illegal duplication of music.
Intel's investment in Liquid Audio is part of a $20 million, strategic third round of financing. Other investors in Liquid Audio include MediaOne Interactive Services, a MediaOne unit, an affiliate of MetroMedia Co., Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, Phoenix Partners and Paul Allen's Vulcan Ventures Inc.

In June, Intel announced a collaboration with Launch Media Inc., to develop the first personalized music channel to be delivered via a broad band connection, an application that requires personal computers running high performance chips.
Intel also made another undisclosed investment in Quokka Sports, based in San Francisco, which develops interactive, immersive environments for fans to participate in a sporting event, such as the Whitebread Round The World sailing race.
The additional investment by Intel in Quokka Sports is part of its second round in financing totaling $16 million. New investors in Quokka include Accel Partners and MediaOne Ventures, the venture arm of MediaOne Group Inc.
Other Quokka investors include BancAmerica Robertson Stephens, Media Technology Ventures and Trinity Ventures.
Quokka was founded in 1996 by two Australians and one American, including John Bertrand, the Australian sailing skipper who led Australia to win the Americas Cup from the U.S. in 1983, breaking one of the longest running sports records in history.
A quokka is a Kangaroo-like animal, found on an Australian island called Rottnest. The quokka is known for its speed, resourcefulness and survival abilities. |
