How's Jim Cramer doing?
When I read that Level 3 Communications Inc. (LVLT) had a big fourth-quarter loss and announced it would eliminate 1,000 jobs to reduce costs, a bell went off in my head. LVLT ... wasn't that Jim Cramer's No. 1 speculative pick for the year? Didn't he talk about it on CNBC's "Mad Money" and write about it on TheStreet.com?
So, for the heck of it -- and nothing else -- I decided to see how Mr. Cramer's three risky recommendations have done since he wrote them up Jan. 5. The answer is ... pretty darn well.
Overall, the thimble of three stocks (too few for a basket) is up 23%, trouncing the Dow Jones Industrial Average's gain of about 1.4%. Level 3 was up 10.5% at midday Thursday. Of the two other speculations, Rite Aid Corp. (RAD) was ahead almost 16%, while Savient Pharmaceuticals Inc. (SVNT) has gained 32%.
Good job, Mr. Cramer.
Howard Stern wants a trademark
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office announced that it's considering Howard Stern's application for a trademark on the words, "king of all media."
The USPTO's Web site shows Stern's New York attorney applied for the trademark last fall to apply to "live and recorded performances and radio-, satellite- and television-broadcast performances ... featuring humorous observations of the human condition." The application says that Stern first used the phrase in 1994.
The Web domain Kingofallmedia.com is for sale through BuyDomains.com. The asking price is $40,000.
By the way, Forbes is reporting that Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. (SIRI) paid Howard Stern $302 million last year. That's $1.16 million a weekday.
