China Official Denies Suspension Of CDMA Rollout -Report
BEIJING -- China's top telecommunications official has denied a reported government suspension of plans to deploy the CDMA wireless technology developed by Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM), the state-run Beijing Youth Daily reported Tuesday.
Qualcomm signed a licensing deal last month with China Unicom, the country's number two telecommunications company, that set the terms for Chinese operators to start developing CDMA, or code division multiple access networks, a mobile telecommunications standard.
Within a week, however, foreign telecommunications executives reported being told that the government had ordered a delay of the CDMA roll out.
Tuesday's report reflected the conflicting government signals on the policy, saying the Minister of Information Industry, Wu Jichuan, indicated there has been no such stoppage.
"According to market rumors, the Ministry of Information Industry has required China Unicom to stop cooperation with overseas investor Qualcomm on the development of CDMA business," the article said. "Regarding this, Wu Jichuan said 'There is no such statement."
