Hi rory, a couple of well know examples during the last couple of years presentated advantages of shorting against the box. Both IOM and MU were pushed into stratospheric levels because of short covering not because of any fundamentals. This was well known on the street. If one wanted to own the stock in the long run - one could short against the box when you find yourself in this type of situtation. You would not have the paper loss when you cover your short. There is no one who will short at the top and cover at the bottom, so it is not a perfect system but can be used effectively in special cases. I am sure others on this thread can give you other examples of valuable uses of this tool. Joan
