Laura Bush was "standing beside of her man" at Virginia Tech and in many other photo shots.

One advantage to the President's wife being a few steps behind the President is this. If the President is shot at or attack the wife survives or the husband survives(whenever we have a woman President).

Common sense security precautions.

That means that the children are not left without parents if they both should be killed.

We were lucky when JFK was shot that his wife was not shot.
