I am also a Buy & Hold value investor. Sometimes these valuations get too high and I tend to then peel off shares and put the proceeds into something else. The two I regret were Waste Management (WM) and Microsoft (MSFT). I had others techs like ORCL that I let go too.

I also avoided some land mines like RAIL and many of the smaller oilers. Holding some that eventually blew up like DF (Dean Foods) as they recently filed chapter 11.

Each has their own issues where (1) valuations got too high and/or (2) stock valuations looked even better but avoiding some of the red flag alerts (like huge debt).

I tend to peel off some of the shares of those large cap (typically technology) value stocks and try to find other value Buys in the sector to Buy/Hold. I guess w/ MSFT their new CEO announcement may have/could be the signal to buy more shares. It's easy to look in the rear view mirror.

I also, look at total positions held, percent of portfolio and sector coverage for annual re-balancing. Still there is no correct approach while diversification has saved me from big portfolio blow ups.

Would be interested to hear what others do for their Sell decision. I prefer to hold forever but the company must meet certain growth/EPS and income (ie div) requirements.

Happy Holidays & New Year.
