BINGHAMTON, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 1997--Semiconductor
Laser International Corp. (SLI) (NASDAQ: SLIC, SLICW), announced
today that the company has been awarded a two year contract, with an
option for an additional three years, by the United States Air Force
(USAF) Phillips Laboratory.
According to the terms of the contract, SLI will provide the
USAF Phillips Laboratory with state-of-the-art semiconductor laser
fabrication technology, including epitaxial crystal growth, wafer
processing and device packaging. SLI's technology will be used by the
Laboratory to further the High Power Semiconductor Laser Technology
Program (HPSLT) under the Laser and Imaging Directorate (LIDA) of
Phillips Laboratory.
The USAF Phillips Laboratory is recognized as one of the leading
United States National Laboratories in semiconductor laser research.
In a statement in the Jan. 9, 1997 issue of Technology Edge, a
newsletter of the USAF Phillips Laboratory, Lt. General Roger G.
DeKok, commander of the Air Force and Missile System Center, LA
Air Force Base, CA, said, "Phillips Laboratory is the best space
research institution in the world and its role in the post-Cold War
environment is crucial to this nation's security now and in the
future."
According to Dr. Xinqiao Wang, manager of research and
development for SLI, "This contract will enable SLI to participate
in some of the most exciting and novel research in the field of high
power semiconductor diode lasers. We will demonstrate SLI's
capabilities as a foremost fabricator of high quality, high power
semiconductor diode lasers. With our advanced equipment, processes
and technology, we expect to meet the exacting requirements of the
LIDA in order to further its research in high power lasers."
SLI is a rapidly growing company dedicated to quality
manufacturing and production of high power semiconductor diode lasers
at low cost. SLI's technology has potential uses for automotive,
dental, medical, telecommunications, data storage, printing and
military applications.
