LaserPacific Wins DiVi Awards for Excellence in DVD

Business Wire - August 25, 1998 07:17

HOLLYWOOD, Calif.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--August 25, 1998-- LaserPacific Media Corp. (Nasdaq:LPAC) took home Gold and Silver Awards in the Best DVD Movie category at the First Annual DiVi Awards held during the DVD Production '98 Conference in Universal City, Calif., last week.

The DiVi Awards, sponsored by the International Recording Media Association (IRMA) and publisher Miller Freeman PSN, showcase the year's most creative DVDs. LaserPacific's entry of Artisan Entertainment's bestseller "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" won the Silver DiVi for Menu Design, Authoring and Encoding.

This is the second win in recent months for the LaserPacific Visual Effects design team that took home a Monitor award for "The Journey of Allen Strange" in July. Also in the Best DVD Movie category, the Gold DiVi went to LaserPacific for authoring and encoding of New Line Cinema's "Spawn." LaserPacific shared the "Spawn" DiVi with the menu design firm EMA.

Leon Silverman, executive vice president of LaserPacific, noted that the two-out-of-three sweep in the Best Movie DVD category is "a tribute to the quality of our team's efforts in helping to define and create the world's most compelling DVD. We are helping our customers create DVD that pushes the envelope, both creatively and technically."

"These titles represent significant milestones in the development of DVD," according to Larry Spangler, LaserPacific's director of Multimedia Operations. "T2's animated and live-action menus set the standard for DVD graphic design. It was the very first movie release utilizing the Dual-Layered (DVD9) DVD technology, and it paved the way for the future of DVD where the DVD9 disc will be the predominant format."

Jay Sherbon, LaserPacific senior research and development engineer, authored both discs and described "Spawn" as one of the most complex DVD titles ever created. "With more than 300 menus, incredible animated graphics with full 5.1-channel sound, and a significant amount of value-added content in addition to the film, this title truly represents the state of the art in DVD."

Silverman noted: "We are fortunate to be working with customers like New Line and Artisan, who allow us to be part of their efforts to redefine home entertainment. It's wonderful to know that these efforts are noticed."
