INTERNATION PHONE SERVICES Cheap-call provider arrested

A man suspected of providing unauthorised international telephone services has been arrested and detained under the court's custody, police said yesterday.

Chavalit Nilwong, 43, was accused of violating the Telecommunications Act by providing switching services for international calls.

Chavalit, who operates a legal consulting firm and an international phone service, had undercut Communications Authority of Thailand (CAT) call rates by 50 per cent, causing the monopoly state-run service provider to lose about Bt1 million per day.

CAT officials said the suspect had leased telephone lines from fixed-line operator TelecomAsia and linked his international switching services with a Singapore-based operator.

COMMENTS: It is tough to break monopolist capitalism. Entrepreneurs beware!
