This is a very interesting question. What concept has had the single
biggest influence on the course of human history? The concept of
death. Are there animals that understand this concept? Can an
elephant say to itself "all elephants die, I am an elephant, therefore
I will die"? How would this influence the behavior of elephants?
Or whales? Maybe elephants weep because they understand that death is
permanent, and their loved one is not coming back. Maybe those
instances of whales beaching themselves are cases of suicide, brought
on by the ability to think conceptually.
