Aware to Participate in Japan's First ADSL Trial

BEDFORD, Mass., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Aware, Inc. (Nasdaq:AWRE), a leading developer of ADSL broadband products designed to increase the speed of data communications over existing copper telephone networks, announced today that it will participate in Japan's first asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) trial.

The first in a series of ADSL trials in Japan aimed at improving the efficiency of the existing Japanese telecommunications network, the trial will take place in Ina-city, in the Nagano prefecture of Japan located near the designated site for the next Olympic Games.

Aware will join Sonet (the company's Japanese distributor), and a group of Japanese organizations lead by the UNIX Business Association in installing ADSL and other equipment necessary to provide high-speed Internet access to Japanese subscribers. Aware's ADSL products can achieve rates of up to 8 Mbps downstream and 768 kbps upstream, making this technology an ideal solution for Internet access, video conferencing, telecommuting, and simultaneous voice and data
applications.

''Participation in this trial will be a critical factor in an ADSL supplier's success in the Japanese market,'' said Hiroaki Kobayashi, chief executive officer and president of Sonet International Corp., the largest ADSL distributor in Japan. ''ADSL technology will help Japanese telephone companies to provide residential customers with high-speed data communications at reasonable costs, while preserving their investment in copper telephone networks.''

''The worldwide business opportunity for ADSL is approximately 600 million lines, and the Japanese market will represent a significant portion of this,'' noted James Bender, president and chief executive officer of Aware. ''We are very pleased to be able to demonstrate the advantages of our technology to the rapidly growing Japanese economy.''

In addition, Aware has been selected to demonstrate its ADSL products at the Smart Lake Multimedia Conference in Suwa City, also in the Nagano prefecture of Japan. The conference is sponsored by a number of local businesses, including Nippon Telephone and Telegraph.
