Data management has moved to the center of the IT universe. I agree 100% with your excellent post.

EMC's strategy of talking to all processors (UNIX, NT, etc.) is correct. The lion's share of the IT budget is surely going to data management (including storage capacity) and networking. The various CPUs attached to the network are bound by having to run software that meets standards for interacting with data management systems. My guess is that the current 80-20 split is 80% data management and 20% for data processing and analysis.
